People who have known be for a while, and even those who don’t, will know I will always speak with glowing, reverential terms about Tony Jaa’s debut film Ong Bak, quite simply one of the most brutal martial arts films ever made, at least since Bruce Lee left us. Ong Bak was uncompromising, stylish, low-budget class, such a bar-raiser from standard Hollywood fare that it couldn’t help but be elevated into the prime category of “cult favourite” status by genre fans ever since.
And now we have the teaser for the sequel, Ong Bak 2: The Beginning, and a masterfully ordinary trailer it is. Tony Jaa, the king of current martial arts cinematography and action, has a bigger budget, better effects, no doubt a more convincing storyline (the story in Ong Bak was a little lame, to be honest) but this trailer has left me feeling a little… well, underwhelmed. Take a look and see if you agree with me. If you haven’t seen the original film though, perhaps do so before you stick your beak into this crazy, action packed world.
