The Academy’s annual Governor’s Awards were held last night (Hollywood time) awarding three industry luminaries honorary Oscars for their lifetime of work .\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The three recipients this year were Gina Rowlands, Spike Lee, and Debbie Reynolds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the Academy Website:<\/strong>\u00a0Rowlands, an original talent whose devotion to her craft has earned her worldwide recognition as an independent film icon, received Academy Award nominations for her lead performances in \u201cA Woman under the Influence\u201d (1974) and \u201cGloria\u201d (1980), both directed by her husband and frequent collaborator, John Cassavetes.\u00a0 She got her start on the New York stage and in live television in the 1950s and has appeared in 40 feature films to date, from \u201cThe High Cost of Loving\u201d in 1958 to \u201cSix Dance Lessons in Six Weeks,\u201d which she starred in earlier this year. \u00a0Her other notable films include \u201cLonely Are the Brave,\u201d \u201cFaces,\u201d \u201cMinnie and Moskowitz,\u201d \u201cOpening Night,\u201d \u201cAnother Woman,\u201d \u201cUnhook the Stars,\u201d \u201cHope Floats,\u201d \u201cPlaying by Heart,\u201d \u201cThe Notebook\u201d and \u201cBroken English.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From the Academy Website:<\/strong>\u00a0Lee, a champion of independent film and an inspiration to young filmmakers, made an auspicious debut with his NYU thesis film, \u201cJoe\u2019s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads,\u201d which won a Student Academy Award\u00ae\u00a0in 1983. \u00a0He proceeded to blaze a distinctive trail with such features as \u201cShe\u2019s Gotta Have It,\u201d \u201cSchool Daze\u201d and \u201cDo the Right Thing,\u201d which earned him a 1989 Oscar\u00ae\u00a0nomination for Original Screenplay. \u00a0His work as a director ranges from the Oscar-nominated documentary feature \u201c4 Little Girls\u201d to such mainstream successes as \u201cMalcolm X\u201d and \u201cInside Man.\u201d \u00a0Lee\u2019s other feature credits include \u201cMo\u2019 Better Blues,\u201d \u201cJungle Fever,\u201d \u201cCrooklyn,\u201d \u201cHe Got Game,\u201d \u201c25th Hour,\u201d \u201cMiracle at St. Anna\u201d and \u201cRed Hook Summer.\u201d\u00a0 He currently serves as the artistic director of the graduate film program at NYU.<\/p>\n

Debbie Reynolds could\u00a0not to attend the Governor’s Awards, instead sending her granddaughter, Billie Lourd, to accept in her place. Ms Lourd is the daughter of Star Wars<\/em> actress Carrie Fisher, who also attended the event.<\/p>\n

From the Academy Website:\u00a0<\/strong>Reynolds, a Hollywood icon since she won hearts with her buoyant performance in \u201cSingin\u2019 in the Rain,\u201d embarked on the role of a lifetime as a founding member of the Thalians, a charitable organization conceived and sustained by entertainers to promote awareness and treatment of mental health issues. \u00a0She served as the group\u2019s president almost continuously from 1957 to 2011, adding numerous terms as board chair and frequently presiding over its annual fundraising gala. \u00a0Her tireless efforts have enabled the Thalians to contribute millions to the Mental Health Center at Cedars-Sinai and to UCLA\u2019s Operation Mend, which helps military veterans recover from the physical and psychological wounds of war. \u00a0Reynolds has appeared in more than 40 feature films, including \u201cThe Tender Trap,\u201d \u201cA Catered Affair\u201d and \u201cMother,\u201d and received a 1964 Oscar nomination for her lead performance in \u201cThe Unsinkable Molly Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
