Species was an awful mess, IIRC, so it's hard to fathom why people would want to copy it (I think it came out a few years before Mimic), but you're right, they're both an example of that "Hard R" horror genre the industry was going through at the time, specifically with a sci-fi edge to it. It's a shame the subgenre kinda died off a bit, and is now consigned to B-movie dreck flooding VOD and DTV markets.

I watched this years ago and remember liking it, but not much else. Glad to hear it holds up pretty well. If memory serves, this came out in the aftermath of Species which was a box office hit and many thought it was just one of the many copycats that came out over the next couple years and it went largely ignored. I might have to revisit this.
My recent post <a href="http://dellonmovies.blogspot.com/2015/09/american-sniper.html" rel="nofollow">American Sniper</a>
