Species was an awful mess, IIRC, so it's hard to fathom why people would want to copy it (I think it came out a few years before Mimic), but you're right, they're both an example of that "Hard R" horror genre the industry was going through at the time, specifically with a sci-fi edge to it. It's a shame the subgenre kinda died off a bit, and is now consigned to B-movie dreck flooding VOD and DTV markets.

Glad to hear it holds up pretty well. If memory serves, this came out in the aftermath of Species which was a box office hit and many thought it was just one of the many copycats that came out over the next couple years and it went largely ignored. I might have to revisit this.
