I knew the main plot idea as I'd read a book which details something very similar, except it was a single person who was making it up the corporate ladder on the other guys team, but didn't know he was being double played.

The book was rather old when I read it probably 15yrs ago, and I can't remember the title. I thought it was something like 'The Corporation', but no amount of Googling or searching Amazon and Wikipedia turned it up and I think my Dad threw the book out, but I'll have to ask.

Anyway, I doubt the core concept was all Tony Gilroy's, but it the way it was told on screen was certainly a lot more interesting with two spies who don't quite trust each other, etc..
