This movie is a treasure. I happened upon it one evening and caught it early so I did not miss much. It has become one of my favorite films. The musical score and acting are all superb as well as the sets and the wardrobe and time period are all very well done. If you are looking for a sweet little story that is something different, then watch this wonderful film.

I’ve waited too long to see this movie. Missed it at initial release in 1998 ... but on the night of Jan 4th 2021 I finally bought the DVD and sat through it. I absolutely loved it .... the soundtrack, artistic direction, tone, all beautiful cinematography, Tim Roth’s performance. An actor I greatly admire. Pruitt’s eye twitching was distracting (thanks for explaining that) nonetheless loved his performance! SPOILER ALERT dead ahead captains - where the film lost me was the unrealistic scenario that 1900 would rather commit suicide ... than continue his love of playing music. If living on land was too difficult.... then get a gig on another ship! How difficult is that??! That part of the script just slides into someone with mental problems. Though eccentric throughout the film ... there was not one sign that 1900 would rather die than get off the ship. Movies are made to suspend our disbelief. Lost at the end ... because it’s just not believable.... Tim Roth’s character would reveal last minute he’d rather get blown up with dynamite! Stupid! As for the rest of the film .... I enjoyed it and now intend to get the full 29 track CD.
