I am not sure what you found disappointing with my review: I did praise the film's production values and sense of style, and I did appreciate WHY the film was the way it was….

As I pointed out, this film is particularly difficult to "enjoy" in the traditional sense of the word, which, while perhaps not catering to the masses, will certainly put people off watching it. I think it's fair to say that There Will Be Blood will divide most audiences, those like yourself will find something deeper within it, and the others who will simply shrug their shoulders and say "what a waste of time".

Personally, I was hoping I'd enjoy the film a lot more, perhaps I was just expecting something different after all the hooplah it received by the "serious" critics.

I'll certainly be giving this film another watch in the future, and hopefully I'll be able to see what it is you found so enjoyable.

I just don't understand what I should have been taking away from this film, really. What was the point of it all – aside from giving DDL yet another Oscar-worthy character to portray? If that's all this film was, then why the hell did it need to be so damn long?

I'll assume I understood the point of it all – that basically Plainview is a complete and utter bastard. Nevertheless, there's an anomaly when it comes to the kid …. sure, his "step brother" is a fraud, so kill him; the preacher is a charlatan, so kill him. But with the kiddie, there is no reason why such a rational, pragmatic and controlled man, at the age that he's at and with the success that he has obtained, should take jealous umbrage at the boy's ambition. Now if he hadn't taken him back after sending him off, I'd understand this.

It's a niggling inconsistency in the characterisation … one that can't be explained with the "he's a complete bastard" excuse.

No worries about having a different opinion on a film than I do (you should check out my review of Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line elsewhere on the site!) because if we all thought the same thing about each film, the world would indeed be a boring place. I have no issue with people who disagree with me (or me with them) but often people just disagree to be argumentative, with no reasoning behind their choice. At least I do try and explain why I like or dislike a certain film. Thanks for stopping by!!
