A great article about this film is by Danny Peary in his first Cult Movies book. In it, he argues that while it is ineptness on a grand scale, who else would have had the courage to make an anti-nuclear (read anti-US military) film at the height of McCarthyism. A cross dressing, alcoholic writer/director of Z-grade movies, perhaps?
