Blogathon – Movie Confessions

My entry into the current Blog-a-thon of the moment, Movie Confessions….. what will I admit to? Plenty, as you’ll find out!!

Nostra over at My Film Views invented this sweet little blog-a-thon to keep us all occupied. Here’s my input into it.

Which Classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

Gone With The Wind. It’s the granddaddy of all classic Golden Age films and I still haven’t sat through the entire thing. I don’t know, perhaps I’m just annoyed with the stagey style of it all, or the acting, or the dialogue, but this film just puts me to sleep.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

I’m ashamed to say “plenty” – here’s the ten most important.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

The Red Shoes

The Searchers

Triumph Of The Will (nah, just can’t.)

Raging Bull

Seven Samurai

The Battleship Potemkin

Rebel Without A Cause

The Graduate

The African Queen

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

No. But I was once “ticket checked” by an overzealous employee at the local cinema when I wandered across the hall into my next film (it was The Astronaut’s Wife, and I had purchased a ticket, I just didn’t want to walk back down to the stall and show it to the dude) – by the look on his face, I think he was expecting to be kicking me out….. he he he….

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

Rene Zellweger. Chipmunk Cheeks, I call her. She looks like she’s swallowed a lemon and hasn’t passed it yet, and I’ve endured every film she’s been in since she showed up with Jim Carrey in Me, Myself & Irene. About the only film in which she’s appeared have I enjoyed her performance was Chicago.

From which big name director have you never seen any movie (and why?)

Ingmar Bergman. Never seen one of his films.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

Armageddon. Yeah, I know. But I loved it from day one.

Have you ever been one of “those annoying people” at the cinema?

No. I f*cking hate “those” people. If you’re one of “those” people you lose the right to stay in the cinema, as far as I’m concerned.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

I think I went to see Batman & Robin because Alicia Silverstone looked hot as Batgirl. Yeah, like you’ve never done that before.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

Not at all – while I don’t actively seek out many foreign films since I lack the time to get past the plethora of English-language films on offer, I’m not afraid to read a film either. Purchased 13 Assassins sight unseen and watched it after a recommendation from a trusted source – and loved it. So no, subtitles don’t bother me.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

I don’t think so. It’s a big collection. I’m pretty sure some of my wife’s films I’ve never watched, and never will, but I’m too lazy to get up off my chair and go over and figure out which ones they are. They’re chick films, so they’re low on my “must watch-o-meter”.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

Vampyros Lesbos. Got it on a whim (for the kitsch factor) and detested it – of course, you try explaining that film to your wife and selling it on eBay.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

I have 5 subwoofers, one for each audio channel. I can make even a Woody Allen film move my house foundations if I so desire.

Any other confessions you want to make?

I don’t watch anywhere near enough pre-1970 films. I watch a few, but not enough.

    1. Yeah, I'm surprised with the GWTW & Bergman coming out as confessions across the board – I've seen a good half-dozen others say the same thing. I'm not sure what it is with Bergman in particular that stops people watching….

  1. Thanks for the props, Dirk. I just clicked over to your site to make sense of that last sentence – nice stuff. I'm gonna head back and read more quite soon! Thanks for dropping by!!
