  1. Glad to see The Descendants win but the coverage of the event on E! was horrendous (a bit like Gervais' performance).

…Gervais' brutish braggart was completely upstaged by Colin Firth's wry jibe and William H. Macy's song.

  2. The Artist really is wonderful- once you see it, you'll be so glad it's getting so many awards. And I have a sick feeling in my stomach that Drive isn't going to get any nominations at all (except one for Albert Brooks) come Oscar season, but I really, really, hope my gut feeling is wrong.

  3. I skipped this year's telecast and I don't think I miss much.

I feel the same way about Meryl, can't really knock her for winning yet again, though part of me thinks, it's really not fair… come on, give others a chance!

Well am I glad someone also thinks Clooney is overrated. Now granted I haven't see The Descendants but is he REALLY the best of the pack??

I hope you get to see The Artist soon, Rodney!

  4. I was left very unmoved by the Golden Globes this year. 'The Artist' cleaned up and it still has yet to come to theaters near me. It was really hard to care about it sweeping the place when you can't even see the movie. I really wanted Rooney Mara to get Best Actress and instead they gave it to Meryl Streep, naturally. Maybe it is me but every awards season, they seem to shower Clooney and Streep no matter what they are in. Streep could be in Alvin and the Chipmunks 4 and get a nomination. I was happy to see 'The Adventures of Tintin' grab Best Animated Film, Woody Allen get Best Screenplay, and Scorsese get Best Director for the incredible 'Hugo'. I also think 'Drive' deserved a Best Picture-Drama nomination. Maybe I'm just being cranky this year but I was kind of bored with the Globes. I hope the Oscars are better.

    1. @ Scott – I didn't get to see them either (at least, not live: I had to wait until the nightly news to see the highlights) but from what I hear they were pretty boring.

@ Steve – I don't really care much for the GG's, to be honest, I much prefer the Oscars as my cinematic compass. Whether that's for good or bad, I don't know. I agree with you on Drive – if that film doesn't get a Best Picture nomination next month I'm gonna give up on the Oscars as well. I will have to disagree with you on my old mate Meryl, though. I think she's a fabulous actress, and consistently challenges herself in whatever role she takes on, and I think this is a testament to her peerage and praise within the industry. I have yet to see The Iron lady, but if she knocks it out like Helen Mirren did for The Queen I can't argue against it. (as an aside, I think Rooney Mara may have missed out because it's been so soon since Noomi Rapace portrayed the same role, leaving the HFPA in a sticky situation where they nominate a Hollywood actress over a Swedish actress for essentially the same portrayal… Mara is not going to win the Oscar she'll inevitably me nominated for either…) Clooney, on the other hand, I think is overrated. His films are awesome, don't get me wrong, for the most part, and I think his directorial style is gaining traction as a rounded, quality effort, but the adulation with which he's treated in Hollywood feels like people trying to suck up….

And I can't wait to see The Artist either….. If I don't see it before Oscar night, I'm gonna have to illegally download it I think! 😉
