Uneven, often slow, yet still eminently watchable, the final chapter in the Millennium Trilogy plays out with almost constructed style, and although once more I lament the lack of pairing of the two key leads on screen until the very end, this is a satisfying, if altogether unfinished, conclusion to the saga. Those who enjoyed the previous two films will find a lot to enjoy - and a lot to be frustrated at - with this grand finale.

Well crafted detective sequel isn't as well crafted as the original, nor is it as absorbing from a character point of view, although the broadening of Lisbeth's history and the disturbing revelations about her past keeps the story ticking along nicely. Fire is well shot, well acted and is effective in its better moments, although unlike its predecessor there's not as many of them. The secondary cast get a larger cut of the screen-time here, even if they're often shunted aside by the story's demand for action. But the focus is on Lisbeth, and she's the glue that holds this film, and the entire franchise, together. And when she's not on screen, a lot of the fire goes out of this one.

Astonishingly good crime thriller from Sweden, with Rapace and Nyqvist holding it all together through the wonderful direction of Neils Arden Oplev. As unfamiliar as I am with the source material this film is based on, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is as close to a perfect adaptation of a book as I've ever seen. The film is tense, mysterious, occasionally creepy, and altogether sublime in its execution, and I cannot recommend it more highly for those willing to give it a shot.

Expositionally heavy, mind-bendingly tedious fantasy epic, The Last Airbender is an unfortunate entry into one of those franchises that never really takes off... like Eragon, for example. Shyamalan's direction isn't too bad, and he handles the action and majesty of this story with consummate ease, yet the script is terribly wooden and clunky, and the characters poorly written. It's as if we're expected to already know who these people are before watching the film, which means if you're not a fan of the animated Nickelodeon series of the same name, this entire film is going to be a gaggle of WTF's as you watch it.

As part of our Greatest of The Modern Age series, this particular list has been perhaps the most difficult to compile. Choosing, out of the thousands of films released since 1980, the ten best cinematic moments, has been one of the hardest top 10 lists I’ve been involved in. The communal moments in film, where an audience is stunned, shocked or simply entertained by some of cinema’s most astonishing scenes; be it dramatic, funny or thrilling, they’re moments that stand apart from the others, often standing apart from the very films they appear in. Mention the words “the shower scene” and you go straight to Psycho. Mention “Warm apple pie” and you get that mental image of Jason Biggs thrusting himself into a desert on his kitchen table in American Pie. Mention “the chariot race” and you go straight to Ben Hur. Moments in cinema that transcend the medium and enter the pop culture zeitgeist. That’s what we’re chasing here. We have cast our eye across the many varied film moments since 1980, and we think we’ve come pretty close to an unalterable list of the very best of moments in film in the last 30 years.
