Vale – Nicholas Courtney

Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart.

A part of my childhood died today, with news coming through about the passing of one of Doctor Who’s most loyal allies, Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart. Nicholas Courtney, the man who gave us the stiff-upper-lip military character, passed away today aged 81. He appeared with 6 of the first seven Doctors (he didn’t take part in any story featuring Colin Baker), and had reprised his most famous role in the Doctor Who spin-off, The Sarah-Jane Chronicles, last year. His most famous quote from the show, and I’m paraphrasing here: “Chap with the wings over there, five rounds rapid.”

A sad day for Doctor Who fans around the world.
