Susannah York - 1939-2011

A quick tip of the hat this morning folks, to acknowledge the passing of Oscar nominee (and Superman’s mum!) Susannah York, who passed away on Saturday. York, who appeared in numerous films throughout her career, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Alice LeBlanc, for director Sidney Pollack, in They Shoot Horses Don’t They?. Her portrayal of Lara, wife of Jor El and mother to the future Superman in the Christopher Reeve series, also elevated her in the public consciousness. Among her many film appearances, she also had roles in Tom Jones, A Man For All Seasons, Oh! What A Lovely War, Images, Sky Riders, Falling In Love Again, A Summer Story, and Franklyn.

Susannah York died from complications of cancer, aged 72, on January 15th.
